HOW
ARE HORMONES TESTED?
Saliva collection is simple, non-invasive and can be performed in
the privacy of your home. The specimen collection kit is sent by
U.S. Mail to your home and contains a small brochure that will provide
general information, guidelines, and instructions for saliva collection.
When the lab receives the specimen it will be tested using Enzyme
Immuno Assay (EIA). This sensitive methodology insures accurate
results. You will receive your hormone test results within 7 working
days following receipt of the sample. Hormones in saliva are stable
for 7-10 days at room temperature, so shipment by regular US mail
will not compromise saliva test results.
WHY SALIVA?
Saliva has several obvious advantages over blood for testing of
hormone imbalance. For example, saliva is simple to collect, can
be done in the privacy of your home under stress-free conditions,
and can be collected at the optimal time of day. Blood, on the
other hand, requires a specialist in blood collection procedures,
must be done at the hospital or clinic, is stressful, and often
can not be collected at the proper time of day.
Some hormones naturally fall by 50-90% during the course of the
day, so collection timing is important for results that accurately
reflect your hormonal status. Only about 1-5% of the steroid hormones
in blood are in the unbound or free form, the remaining 95-99%
are tightly bound to blood proteins. It is this unbound fraction
of hormones that enters tissues throughout your body, including
the salivary glands. Hence, salivary hormones are representative
of the free or unbound hormones in blood that are "bioavailable"
to tissues of your body. Saliva testing is the most accurate method
of evaluating how hormone replacement therapy, topical creams,
diet, herbal therapy, and exercise can help influence hormone
imbalance.
WHO
SHOULD BE TESTED?
Those concerned with decreasing hormone levels as a result of
age. Cycling women experiencing PMS symptoms, perhaps related
to a hormonal imbalance. Peri and postmenopausal women concerned
with their estradiol and progesterone levels for replacement considerations.
Those wishing to monitor their hormone levels following replacement
therapy (oral, sublingual or topical), and subsequently regulate
their supplement levels.
WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED
WITH MY HORMONE LEVELS?
Adequate levels and an appropriate balance of hormones are necessary
for maintaining optimal health and well being in both females
and males. This family of steroid hormones supports a wide range
of essential physiological functions including blood lipid balance,
bone mineral density, fertility, sexuality, normal thyroid function,
a general sense of well being, and certain aspects of normal brain
function.
Self-tests are also useful for monitoring the effectiveness of
products containing hormones (skin creams, pills and suppositories)
or their precursors, HRT, as well as measuring the impact of phytoestrogens
consumed in foods and herbs.
